Lesson 1: motion basics

Motion is just changing game stats.

Before any formula, know what each stat means. If a player, kart, or bike moves on a map, physics can describe it.

Read the HUD before the math.

  • Position is the player or bike's spot on the map.
  • Distance is how much path was actually traveled.
  • Speed is how much distance is covered each second.
  • Velocity is speed plus direction.
  • Acceleration is how quickly velocity changes because of a boost, brake, or turn.

If a kart moves right at 4 m/s, its velocity is 4 m/s right. If a boost makes that number grow each second, that is acceleration.

Position

Your spot on the map compared with a start point. Spawn can be 0 m. A checkpoint might be 30 m.

Distance

How much path you actually traveled. If you run from spawn to a 30 m checkpoint, distance is 30 m.

Time

How long the move took on the clock. If the level timer says 6 seconds, time is 6 s.

Speed

How much distance you cover each second. The quiz formula is speed = distance / time.

Velocity

Speed with a direction. 5 m/s right and 5 m/s left are different velocities.

Acceleration

How quickly velocity changes. A kart going from 2 m/s to 5 m/s is accelerating.

Direction matters

A boost with your motion speeds you up. A brake or wall bump against your motion slows you down.

Game movement warm-up

Imagine a racing game level. You are not solving yet. You are learning which stat the question is asking for.

  1. Where did the player spawn? That starting spot is position 0 m.
  2. How far is the checkpoint? That path length is distance.
  3. How many seconds are on the level clock? That is time.
  4. How many meters happen each second? That is speed.
  5. Which way is the player moving? Speed plus direction is velocity.
  6. Did a boost, brake, or turn change velocity? That change is acceleration.

  1. Find the distance number in the story.
  2. Find the time number in the story.
  3. Use speed = distance / time.
  4. Keep the unit: meters per second means m/s.

Training level: speed

A bike avatar travels 24 meters in 6 seconds. Use the idea, not a memorized answer: speed tells you how many meters are covered each second.

  • Distance = 24 m
  • Time = 6 s
  • Speed = distance / time

Lesson 2: forces

Now push the cart like a game object.

Push, mass, and friction behave like game stats. Boost force tries to speed up the cart, friction fights it, and mass is how heavy the cart feels.

Imagine a kart on a sticky floor. A boost force pushes right. Friction pushes left. Net force is the leftover force after the two sides fight.

Use these checkpoints for forces.

A 50 N push minus 10 N friction gives 40 N net force. 40 N / 20 kg = 2.00 m/s^2.

Kart Boost Challenge

A 12 kg kart starts from rest. A boost force pushes 42 N to the right. The sticky floor adds 6 N of friction to the left. Find the winning force, then how the speed stat changes.

  • Boost force = 42 N right
  • Friction = 6 N left
  • Mass = 12 kg
  • Time = 3 s
